WHEN STOUT DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH!2009-12-23
As if we hadn't already experienced a dose of dino goodness earlier this year with the release of William Stout: Prehistoric Life Murals (a simply amazing book featuring Bill's gargantuan paintings for The Houston Museum of Natural Science, Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom, and the San Diego Natural History Museum), now Flesk Publications has essentially created a triptych with the publication of Stout's Dinosaur Discoveries and New Dinosaur Discoveries A-Z.
Dinosaur Discoveries features sixty-one paintings of new dinosaurs that have been discovered or more fully described and understood in the past twenty years, all beautifully rendered in Bill's trademark ink and gouache technique. Reflecting the most up-to-date information and theories from the Paleo community, the art and text provides a refreshing look at the thunder lizards (though we'll never have quite the same sense of awe for a feathered T-Rex as we did for Gwangi or the hero of Jurassic Park). Available in both paperback and as a signed hardcover limited to a mere 500 copies, we'd suggest opting for the hardcover while copies are still around: at $39,95, it's a bargain!
In New Dinosaur Discoveries A-Z , Stout explores twenty-six of perhaps the coolest dinosaur discoveries in a smaller but equally arresting more kid-friendly edition. Saurian facts and trivia accompany each carefully researched illustration, nurturing the interests of burgeoning Paleontologists of all ages.
As with all Flesk titles, the production values are top-notch, the design work impressive, and the content absorbing: these are definitely two books worth adding to the bookshelf.
