Easily one of the most gifted illustrators of the 20th Century and an influential giant in the SF art world, John created intergalactic craft with the same alacrity that he painted historical tableaus, rolling landscapes, and gallery nudes. John began his career as a staff artist with the Brown & Bigalow calendar company in in the 1950s, but switched to freelancing in the early 1960s and went on to created memorable art for numerous books, advertising campaigns, and magazines (including National Geographic). John's movie work included paintings for the 1976 remake of King Kong, Orca The Killer Whale, and a little film called Star Wars.


The recipient of the Spectrum Grand Master Award in 1999, John was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2004. Paper Tiger published a collection of his art edited by Jane Frank, The Art of John Berkey, in 2003.
